Site Lead, Fisherman's Memorial Hospital
He/Him

Dr. John Jenkins is the Site Lead and the Head of Emergency Services at Fishermen's Memorial Hospital. He has been a family physician in Lunenburg since 1993 and is the founding member of the Lunenburg Family Health Collaborative. Since 2006, he has worked at Riverview Enhanced Living, a residential care facility with over 50 residents. Dr. Jenkins is also an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Dalhousie University.

Born in Halifax, Dr. Jenkins grew up in Simcoe, Ontario. It was not until the age of 12 that he returned to his birthplace in Halifax and fell in love with the seaside province. For the past three decades, he has proudly called the town of Lunenburg home, where some of his ancestors have roots dating back to the 1760s.

In the 1970s, Dr. Jenkins pursued an arts degree at Dalhousie University before obtaining his Captain's certification and established a ferry and harbor tour operation to McNab's Island in Halifax Harbour in 1980. Despite his efforts, visitors were not permitted on the island at the time, prompting him to return to his academic pursuits. He graduated from medical school in 1992 before completing a one-year rotating internship at Dalhousie University. In 2005, he obtained his certification from the College of Family Physicians.

Dr. Jenkins finds great fulfillment in the complexities of diagnosing challenging medical conditions and developing effective treatment plans to aid his patients. Working with such patients brings immense satisfaction, as their appreciation for his efforts is deeply rewarding. In addition to his passion for diagnosing and treating challenging cases, Dr. Jenkins provides support to the emergency departments at Fishermen's Memorial Hospital and Roseway Hospital. He finds great purpose in being able to contribute and make a positive impact on the lives of those seeking medical attention during their moments of vulnerability.

Outside of medicine, he has been the organizer for Lunenburg Shinny Hockey since 1996, a weekly fun experience for all in the winter months. He also enjoys biking, sailing, hiking, kayaking and other fun activities with his energetic wife, Glenna.
