Mariana Umbria is a public health and health management professional with an international medical background. She was born and trained in Venezuela, where she obtained her medical doctor (MD) degree and practiced as a general practitioner before completing one year of general surgery training and specializing in ophthalmology. She practiced briefly as an ophthalmologist in Venezuela prior to transitioning toward health systems leadership and policy.
Mariana was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship by the United States Department of State to pursue a master of public health degree in health management and policy. Following her graduate studies, she relocated to Canada and has since worked in a variety of administrative and leadership-support roles within the healthcare system. She has chosen to focus her career on public health practice and health system management, where she believes she can contribute most meaningfully through population-level planning, collaboration and system improvement.
Now based in Nova Scotia, Mariana is committed to supporting strong, inclusive healthcare systems and intends to continue building her professional and personal life in the province. Outside of work, she enjoys traveling, planning trips, staying active and spending time with her husband, family and friends.
