Dr. Eissa was born in Kuwait to Egyptian parents and became a Canadian citizen in 2014. His family moved to Nova Scotia in search of both a great place to live and opportunities for high-quality medical training and practice.
He graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at Cairo University (Kasr Al Ainy Medical School) in Egypt, where he completed both his undergraduate medical education and postgraduate training. The Egyptian medical education model differs from Canada’s, with students entering medical school directly after high school and completing a six-year medical program. He also holds the MRCP-UK which is the internal medicine certification from the Royal College of UK. He later came to Nova Scotia for further training and completed Internal Medicine residency training through Dalhousie University so now also holds the FRCPC in Internal Medicine. His wife, Dr. Abir Hussein, and daughters had already settled in Yarmouth in 2011, and he joined them in 2015.
Dr. Eissa currently practices in Yarmouth and is involved in physician leadership and healthcare system improvement initiatives within Nova Scotia Health. He is also an Assistant Professor with Dalhousie Medicine. His clinical interests include Internal Medicine and COPD care, and current research interests focus on the application of artificial intelligence in medicine as well as COPD-related research.
What he enjoys most about healthcare is working collaboratively with patients, colleagues and healthcare teams to improve outcomes and strengthen access to care in rural communities. He believes that respectful teamwork, continuous learning and innovation are key to delivering excellent patient care.
Outside of medicine, he enjoys listening to music and playing piano, keyboard and guitar. He is also interested in fitness, bodybuilding and walking. His wife is a Family Medicine specialist in Yarmouth and serves as Assistant Dean of Distributed Medical Education at Dalhousie University. They have four daughters. His oldest recently completed a BSc in Neuroscience, their second daughter is studying at the Sobey School of Business at Saint Mary's University, and two youngest daughters are still in school.
