Dr. Paul MacDonald has enjoyed a 25-year career in medicine as a cardiologist in hospitals across Cape Breton. For more than five years, he served as department head for internal medicine. He is now bringing this leadership experience forward to help Cape Breton Regional Hospital evolve and expand delivery of healthcare to Cape Bretoners.
Dr. MacDonald completed his Bachelor of Science at Acadia University before attending Dalhousie Medical School for his Medical Doctorate (where he was class valedictorian), Internal Medicine Residency (Resident of the Year) and Cardiology Residency. Before completing his Internal Medicine Residency Program, he practiced family medicine for two years. From 1998-2007, Dr. MacDonald was the director of internal medicine residency training program at Cape Breton Regional Hospital. He maintains an active affiliation with Dalhousie University as an assistant professor in the medical school.
A celebrated researcher with interest in cardiovascular risk screening and management, his study, Hockey Takes Heart: Cardiac Disease Associated with Adult Hockey, received the attention of hockey players, researchers and media, including Hockey Night in Canada.
Dr. MacDonald lives in Sydney with his wife. They have three daughters.
