Family Medicine Steps to Licensure
Step 1: Determine Eligibility. Your first step is to determine your eligibility for the Alternate Route to Certification without Examination with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC). There is a cost associated (approximately $1500) with membership fee and credential assessment with the CFPC.
Step 2: Physicians Apply. Create your physiciansapply.ca account.
Step 3: Submit your credentials for source verification through Physiciansapply.ca. Please submit the notarized documentation with cover sheets requested. Each document that requires source verification (medical degree, transcript, post graduate training, specialty certificate and medical licence) costs approximately $170 per document and if they require translation it is approximately $140 each. It is estimated that the cost of verification of the source documents is around $1500. This does not include the cost of mailing the documents. Contact the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) at service@mcc.ca if help is needed to create or access to the physiciansapply.ca account.
Step 4: Share with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
Step 5: Medical Council of Canada Exams. Should you qualify for Canadian certification without examination from the CFPC and you meet the criteria of Acceptable Alternative to the LMCC from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS), there may be no requirement for the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam (MCCQE) Part I. You may qualify for a full licence in Nova Scotia.
If you do not meet the Acceptable Alternative to the LMCC, you will have to register and successfully complete the Medical Council Qualifying Exam Part I. The MCCQE Part I exam can be written outside of Canada. The successful completion of the Part I may allow for a full license to be issued with the CPSNS.
Step 6 – Submit application to CPSNS through physiciansapply.ca. This is the first step of a two-step process. Return to your account in physiciansapply.ca and choose the Application for Medical Registration in Canada (AMRC). Complete the review of qualifications for CPSNS at physiciansapply.ca and pay the appropriate fees (approximately $350). The fees are non-refundable. CPSNS will review the information you submitted through physiciansapply.ca to find out if you are qualified to move on in the application process. They will email you directly to tell you if you qualify for the licence or not:
- If you qualify, CPSNS will provide you with direction to complete the second part of the application through physiciansapply.ca.
- If you do NOT qualify, they will explain why.
Step 6a – Complete your application process. Complete and submit the balance of the application through physiciansapply.ca. CPSNS will send an email to you with a log in for your Application Documentation Status (ADS) website. Through the ADS website, you can submit any additional items required needed to complete the application process. This may include things such as:
- a criminal record check
- reference letters
- certificates of professional conduct from the regulatory or licensing authority in each jurisdiction where you have practiced medicine or held a medical licence as instructed by your registration coordinator
- a sponsor and a supervisor of whom CPSNS approves (applies only to a defined license)
**Please note, there is an expiration period on these documents, do not request these documents prior to the Registration Coordinator advising, as they are specific forms to the CPSNS and may vary.
Once your licensure eligibility has been determined we can discuss further on recruitment opportunities and work with you to find the best fit.
